Do You Want to be an Ag Pilot?

When we first started this channel, what we didn’t expect was the overwhelming amount of responses we would receive from people who are trying to become or would like to become an Ag Pilot. It makes sense, really, as there are not many resources out there on how to even get into this industry. We are honored and flattered that people are looking to us for advice.

Whether you are working on becoming an Ag Pilot or it’s a dream of yours, this post is a great place to start. Before you reach out to us with questions, watch these videos!

This first video talks a bit about why Tyson got into Crop Dusting and the struggle it was for him to break into the industry. Keep in mind this was about 15 years ago and a lot has changed since then.

The next video is about the lifestyle of being an Ag Pilot. There are a lot of benefits, but there are some cons too. You may have to relocate, especially if you’re not currently in an agricultural environment. You may not be able to spend time with your significant other/family. You may miss weddings and funerals that take place during the spray season. You don’t get to pick a schedule and you certainly don’t have a set schedule.

Speaking of schedules, we have a video for that! It’s a part of the business that most don’t understand and can’t comprehend. The agriculture industry as a whole is a 7 days a week sort of industry. When it’s go time, it’s go time. There are application windows, weather delays, and breakdowns that you’re constantly battling with.

Lastly, a lot of people are curious as to how much money an Ag Pilot makes. This is a valid question, especially if you are investing a lot of time and money into making this your career path. One expectation that you should have is that it is going to take a few years to really start making good money. Your first few years will be slow, in a smaller aircraft and your priority should not be to make a lot of money. Your priority should be safely learning how to spray.

Hope this is helpful in your journey to becoming an Ag Pilot. You can do anything you set your mind to! This is a very small industry, so don’t burn any bridges.
